Booking Advice· Updated October 2026
The two most common rooms in student accommodation are the en-suite and the studio. The right one depends on your budget, how social you want your first year to be, and how much you like to cook.
En-suite rooms
A private bedroom with its own bathroom, in a flat of four to eight students who share a kitchen and living space.
- Cheaper, often by 20–30% compared with a studio in the same building.
- Built-in social life. Flatmates are an easy way to make friends in your first weeks.
- Shared kitchen. Great for some, a source of washing-up arguments for others.
Studios
A self-contained room with your own bathroom and kitchenette.
- Full privacy. Your own space, your own schedule, your own fridge.
- Quieter for study, especially for postgraduates and those working part-time.
- Higher rent, and you'll need to make an effort to meet people.
Our quick rule of thumb
- First-year undergraduate, on a budget, wants to meet people: en-suite.
- Postgraduate, working part-time, or values quiet: studio.
- Moving with friends: ask about group bookings for a shared flat together.
